SGT. PEPPER MOVIE...

It was a good idea gone bad. By the late 70’s Robert Stigwood had been involved in some highly successful rock movies. “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Tommy”, “Saturday Night Fever” and “Grease”. The latter two broke records. Where do you go from there? Well it was the 70’s so you went bigger. What was the biggest band of all time? The Beatles. What was their most well received album? Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Who were the biggest stars of that time period? The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. Why stop there though? Alice Cooper, Steve Martin, Aerosmith, Earth, Wind and Fire were also brought on board for the proposed rock musical adaptation of the Beatles successful album. Oddly enough so was George Burns. It didn’t take long for the people involved in the film to see how badly it was going. George Burns character (Mr. Kite) became the narrator reportedly because the Bee Gees delivery of the dialogue (which was probably bad too) left much to be desired. Many people tried to get themselves off of the film to no avail. The film was a flop, and the soundtrack became a discount bin item, although some tracks did fairly well.
Now you can enjoy the film in all its glory here.
The good: Earth Wind and Fire singing “Got To Get You Into My Life”. Aerosmith singing “Come Together”. Sandy Farina’s voice in general. Steve Martin’s scenes. Billy Preston singing “Get Back”. Harmonies on “Nowhere Man”.
The bad: The resolution of the plot was a due ex machina at its most unoriginal. “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” is not a disco song and should never be attempted as one again. Singing “Carry That Weight” while holding a coffin is bad taste.
The wtf: George Burns singing “Fixing A Hole”. Peter Frampton trying to commit suicide by jumping off a two story building. The female lead’s name is Strawberry Fields. Singing female robots. A plane crashes into a hot air balloon causing it’s passengers to be on the plane instead. No, you didn’t read that wrong. And what the heck is up with Lucy? She is supposedly the lead singer of a popular female group, but she is also the driver and all around errand girl for the record company. I’d check that contract. Maybe they drugged her to sign it like they did with Frampton.
